Step into the Scandinavian countryside. Author: Jonas Lundberg
A Scandinavian country home where modern style meets simplicity.
Step out of Stockholm and into the Scandinavian countryside, where the iconic pared-back modern design style takes on an effortless, organic cottage-like charm.
The front hallway, awash in one shade of white, is panelled from the ceiling to the walls to the floor, which homeowner Anna Truelsen and her husband sanded themselves. Black accents ground the space. "It's one of my favorite colours because it's stylish and adds weight to a white interior," she says.
At the kitchen table, you'll find the classic calling cards of Scandi-country style: a vintage barn pendant light; mix-and-match seating (from the Mid-Century Modern-style chairs to the plain white farmhouse-look ones); and, atop the table, a casual arrangement of glass vessels in varying heights. The addition of of a few fresh floral sprigs makes a stand-out centrepiece that looks totally serendipitous
Anna's grandfather used old windows as doors to create the kitchen's tall cabinet, which stores the family's favourite china. Free of knick-knacks and fussy arrangements, the display is approachable yet still beautiful. The cabinet's oversized industrial casters add edge.
In the dining room, there's more formal mix of seating, Anna having switched out only the end chairs. Faux sheepskin seat covers on the side-chairs offer plush texture and striking contrast to the open-framed backs. Behind the table, a 100-year-old crossbar window adds antiquated character. Anna had others installed throughout the house, replacing modern picture windows.
Relaxed, organic moments meet contemporary clean lines in the uniform gallery of black and white photographs from Anna's travels leaned against the wall on picture rails, they honour a casual country setting.
Scandinavian design is all about function: for example, positioning decorative pieces like antlers alongside purposeful ones like necklaces and hats. arranged above the sofa, the monochromatic display has the effect of an art installation, but more interactive – go ahead and grab that accessory on the way out the door.
