Dark meets light

This guest bathroom is a definite departure from the rest of the home’s colour scheme. “I always feel like there needs to be at least one element that throws things off a bit, and this bathroom was it,” says designer Jenny Belanger. “I like how dark wood combines well with light finishes. I knew from the start I wanted to somehow incorporate this look.”

Lean & Green

The colourful oak kitchen is youthful and eye catching. “We chose a green for the cabinets that was fresh and fun,” says designer Milaré Turgeon. In front of them, the Caesarstone island is a hardworking feature used for meal prep and dining. The fetching open-niche design is for displaying dishware.

It's all about tones

"To offset the monochromatic look typically found in modern minimalist interiors, we used a different wood tone on the bookshelves to add warmth and create visual interest," says designer Natalie Owens.

Contrasting views

A beautiful oatmeal-toned island reads like contemporary furniture in the open-plan space and against dark cabinets. “The drapery also makes the kitchen feel like a living space and offers privacy,” says designer Samantha Pynn.

Lovely Laundry Room

With its quaint oval window, nostalgic schoolhouse pendant light, shiplap wall panelling and star-patterned cement floor tiles, the pantry is super pretty and organized to boot – designer and celebrity Jillian Harris spent hours measuring cereal boxes, cans and jars to make sure she’d have enough room for everything.

This room means business

With the rental aspect of Silver Birch Vista in mind, Louis and his team created a meeting/conference room that leads into a separate office. Both are conducive to work, yet the aesthetic is anything but cold and corporate. “I imagined them as dens,” says designer Louis Duncan-He, “and so I introduced lush blue walls, red ochre drapery and a painted brass light fixture in the meeting space.

Creature comforts

The cottagey kitchen has clean lines, but it’s wonderfully textured and warm.  Rather than go with smooth countertops, designer Keely Gow went more rustic with a leather-finished granite. The look is a perfect setting for the stools, which combine metal, faux leather and wood. “When it came to the cabinets, we went with simple lines in a soft off-white,” says Keely.

Bright and cheery

The sunroom’s chaise is part of designer Victoria McKenney’s Namesake Collection of furniture. She designed it to allow for two people to lounge comfortably, face to face. “We think this room was once a balcony that was enclosed and that’s why there’s original raw cedar ceilings. We decided to leave them, as they add such warmth,” says Victoria. A contemporary ceiling light, found online, fosters the eclectic look.

PAUSE & REFRESH

The main-floor dining room, with its curvy chairs, upholstered banquette and loopy abstract light fixture, has just the right mix of chic modern design and relaxed conviviality.

Make it bold

Inset glass cabinets add a boutique feeling within the expanse of green cabinetry, and act as a stage to display a collection of artisanal serving ware. Touches of light wood in the range hood, island and the cabinet interiors lighten the overall look.

Designer Cara Hansen rebooted the family room’s traditional architecture with a healthy dose of modern pizzazz. Botanical-print wallpaper enlivens the original coffered ceiling with dramatic whimsy, which is picked up in the fireplace’s custom concrete mantel and ribbed marble surround. Homeowner Keely Tateossian decided on the green focal wall to play up the fireplace’s design; its flanking floating shelves and cabinets offer nice balance. The owners’ glitzy starburst chandelier is a fun, jewel-like finish.

“This is my favourite room,” says designer Keely Gow of the primary bedroom. “It’s entirely wrapped in this deep, saturated green. It’s so dramatic, but also so warm and natural.” The light-coloured storage bed is daydreamy soft, and the dresser, with its vintage scrollwork, and nightstands are great examples of the kinds of treasures Keely finds secondhand.
