How To Keep Your Whites White
Keeping your whites pristine extends their longevity and makes them look brand-new again.
From sheets to blouses, there’s nothing quite like a crisp white fabric. Between stains, marks, and plain old age, it can be hard to maintain their freshness.
Here are five tips for keeping your white linens and clothing looking good-as-new.
1. Wash whites separately
This may seem like a given, but sorting your white linens from the rest of your washing prevents darker colours from running. It also prevents your whites from taking on a dreaded grey hue.
2. Spot treat stains
Treat stains as soon as they happen for the best results. Use a stain remover, or try a household alternative like baking soda. Dish soap is also a great option, but ensure you fully rinse it off before throwing your linen into the washing machine.
3. Avoid overloading the washing machine
Give your linens and clothing room to rinse in the washer. If they’re piled too close together, grime and dirt will have nowhere to go and can redeposit onto your whites. As a rule of thumb, don’t load your washer more than three-quarters full.
4. Add vinegar
Swap out fabric softener—which can leave residue on white fabrics—for a cup of distilled white vinegar during the rinse cycle. This will help freshen up your linens and eliminate extra detergent.
5. Dry in the sun
Have you heard of sun bleaching? Similar to how the sun can fade colours and patterns, it can brighten your whites back up. Hang your white clothing and linens to dry in a sunny spot or on a clothesline.
