Kitchen design: Builder-basic meets DIY
Kitchen island
Homeowner Christie Kauffman used newel posts to form columns on one side of the expanded kitchen island, then painted the whole thing a deeper shade than the rest of the cabinetry.
Open shelving
Where there was once an upper cabinet, Christie hung open shelves for displaying her everyday dishes and collection of pitchers.
Backsplash
For the kitchen backsplash, Christie selected basic subway tile, but used grey grout for contrast. Off-the-shelf brackets applied to the underside of the upper-cabinets add old-fashioned appeal.
