Question:
We’d like to use our small patio for entertaining right into the fall season. The patio is 10 by 15 feet. Any help would be appreciated.—Annie B., via email
Answer:
Summer is a good time to start planning how to extend the use of your terrace into fall. Here are a few ways to create a comfortable lounge space for entertaining and dining right into the chill of autumn.
• Opt for functional flexibility with two smaller 36-inch square tables instead of one large table. Separate them for small get-togethers (use one for food and one as a bar); when a larger table is needed, simply push them together and throw on a lovely tablecloth.
• A variety of chair styles provides seating for different uses. Folding chairs are invaluable for seating guests while dining; a few cushioned armchairs are handy for both dining and lounging.
• Simple rope lighting installed under tables casts a soft indirect glow that won’t create a glaring, distracting light. Also consider stringing lights in shrubs and hedges for a subtle twinkling effect.
• A utilitarian outdoor storage bench is a helpful way to keep outdoor entertaining items like lanterns, melamine dishes and wine buckets hidden when not in use. Add an outdoor cushion to the top and, voilà, you have extra seating for guests.
