Where to stay

Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel
A stay at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside hotel is the perfect way to indulge in the best of what Norfolk has to offer. From the cascading sunlight in the lobby to the river's reflection in the floor-to-ceiling windows, you’re never far from natural light and fresh air. In fact, the true benefit of the Sheraton Norfolk is that it’s the only waterfront hotel in the city, perfectly situated along the Elizabeth River. Capture day and night views of the water, boardwalk and, if you’ve timed your trip right, lit tall ships at night. 777 Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA., sheratonnorfolkwaterside.com.

Tazewell Hotel and Suites
If you’re looking for more of a city stay, find your temporary home at the Tazewell Hotel & Suites, right in the thick of Norfolk’s theater, entertainment and historic business districts. Enjoy the convenience of having restaurants, shops and activities at your doorstep, including the Waterside Festival Marketplace, USS Nautilus, Towne Point Park and MacArthur Center Mall. When indoors, regard the history and charm of this boutique spot. First constructed in 1906, the hotel underwent a $7 million renovation, restoring the building’s grand 1906 façade and completely reconstructing the hotel’s interior room by room. 245 Granby St, Norfolk, VA., thetazewell.com. norfolk-harboufront-festival2.jpg
What to do

OpSail
If you time your trip just right, you can partake in the splendor of Virginia’s famed OpSail festival. Started by the JFK Administration in 1916, Operation Sail Inc. was meant to improve relations among nations. This national event only happens once every 10 years and is marked by the Parade of Sails as international tall ships travel down the North American coast. Making stops along New York, Boston, Baltimore, all the way down to New Orleans, you can tour the ships from bow to stern, each uniquely designed and decorated to its country of origin. 120 West Main St., Norfolk, VA., opsailvirginia.com.

Harbourfest
A Norfolk tradition beginning from 1976, this harbourfront festival is always held on a weekend in June, featuring a line up of live music, food vendors, harbour and naval base cruises, and a spectacular fireworks show. Towne Point Park, downtown Norfolk, VA., festevents.org.

Chrysler Museum of Art and Glass Studio
Visit the Chrysler Museum of Art and take a moment before stepping in. Set facing the Elizabeth River, the beauty of the expansive European-style façade sets the stage for what is offered inside. While it may not seem large in comparison to other metropolis museums, the Chrysler boasts an impressive display of European and American history, as well as Art Nouveau. The Chrysler Museum Glass Studio is housed in a separate building and allows guests to not only learn how glass art is created in their working studio, but can also partake in workshops. Where to eat

Mermaid Winery
Make your way to Norfolk’s first urban winery. With its grapes coming from Charlottesville, Mermaid Winery produces small lots of wines, offering a selection of whites and reds. In the mood for something with a fruity kick? Try one of their refreshing fruit creations, including their East Beach peach wine and Elizabeth River raspberry wine. Pick your favourite at the tasting bar or try a glass or two with dinner in their garden patio. 330 W. 22nd Street, #106, mermaidwinery.com.

Doumar's
Though you never need an excuse to stop for ice cream, when in Norfolk, a stop at Doumar’s must be made a priority. From its creation at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904, the waffle cone has since traveled and taken up shop in Norfolk, the only Doumar’s location in the world. Top off your fresh handmade cone with Doumar’s ice cream and judge whether or not it is, in fact, one of the best waffle ice cream cones out there. With it’s history and fully operational carhop service, a visit to Doumar’s is not only delicious, but it’s a trip back in time. 1919 Monticello Ave., doumars.com.
