Meet Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Most Luxurious Hotel

The Scotsman elevates a getaway with high-impact hospitality and style.

Luxury alert: Though recently launched, The Scotsman is causing a sensation in Niagara-on-the-Lake and beyond for good reason. It is unabashedly opulent, unblushingly romantic and unlike anything on offer in this historic Ontario town.

The welcome at The Scotsman is a seamless affair. If you’re arriving by car, a member of staff appears immediately (and seemingly out of nowhere) to greet you in the private parking, take your bags and guide you to the front door. Cross the threshold and you may hear the baby grand tinkling and catch the hotel’s signature scent, “Dr. Vranjes Rosso Nobile,” a fruity, slightly spicy, subtle fragrance imported from Italy. A flute of perfectly chilled bubbly is offered as you step inside to marvel at the sumptuous surrounds. Everything is softly lit, rich and inviting. Everywhere you look is a tempting vignette. It’s like you’re inside a delicious chocolate box. Shoulders lower...this is The Scotsman’s invitation to relax and be pampered, and it’s extended even before you’ve checked in.

The Inspiration

The historic building began as an early 19th-century residence, later became the town’s first post office, and was a bed-and-breakfast when Niagara-on-the-Lake residents Brenda and Blair McArthur purchased it in 2019. “Blair and I have travelled throughout Europe and stayed at some of the world’s loveliest hotels,” says Brenda. “I felt our town needed something special, a luxurious, comfortable getaway that’s full-experience from the moment you enter.” The couple oversaw a three-year renovation of the property and enlisted acclaimed designer Lori Morris to help bring it to life. Brenda says, “One of my favourite hotels is Prestonfield House in Edinburgh. My first experience there was magical, and I knew Lori could capture that kind of luxury while still making it feel comfortable and cozy, which is very difficult to do.”

The Suites

The Scotsman offers six suites, five of which are named after some of the McArthur’s favourite Scottish destinations. The nightly rate puts them in the realm of special occasion or indulgence, and, given that, no detail has been overlooked. The Owners’ Suite, for instance, boasts a proper sitting room with a fireplace, powder room, and bathroom featuring a clawfoot tub and separate shower with monsoon-like water pressure.

The minibar is stocked with complimentary full-size glass bottles of Evian, sparkling water, pop and juice, all of which are replenished daily – your preferred tipples can also be stocked in advance and waiting for you. And don’t miss the milk chocolate bars, stamped with The Scotsman logo, tucked next to the coffee machine. The bedding is Egyptian cotton, the flowers are fresh and the amenities abound, from custom toiletries and Dyson hair dryers to robes, pyjamas and slippers. Each suite is plush, uniquely decorated and brimming with sophisticated character so the only hard part is deciding which one to go for.

The Ambiance

The hawk-eye precision and careful consideration of every detail at The Scotsman result in full-stop finery that coexists happily with all-out comfort and ease. There are three lavish lounges that are irresistible to those seeking relaxation with a twist of glam. Top-end details, such as crystal chandeliers, velvet sofas, real burning candles and original artwork, only make these spots more enticing. The surrounds have a swish, members-only-club kind of feel that’s underpinned by a casual, make-yourself-at-home vibe. Outside, there’s a private courtyard lounge where a grand fountain is flanked by sofas and fireplaces (baskets are thoughtfully stocked with blankets to keep the chill at bay). It’s so pleasant, you might not want to leave, but if exploring is on your to-do list, the staff is happy to organize private wine tours, spa treatments and pretty much anything you fancy.

The Food

Breakfast is offered daily and included in your stay. You may enjoy it in any of the communal spaces but a seat in the breakfast room is a dreamy way to start the day. Dressed in pink marble and gold, it’s a stunner that shimmers with chic. The breakfast mugs are Tiffany & Co., and even morning stalwarts like granola and yogurt take on oomph when served in a Villari 24-karat-gold stand decorated with handmade porcelain roses and handblown glass bowls, all crafted by artisans in Italy. Along with continental offerings, there is a small menu with berry-strewn buttermilk pancakes and four egg dishes (get the Scottish Breakfast, if only for the tattie scone). Every detail is carefully considered here for curated comfort that puts guests at ease. The hotel couldn’t be more central and the staff are very good at what they do. This is a place to book for a getaway that’s grand yet filled with little luxuries that bring joy.
