Passau, Germany

Smaller than some of the more renowned European ones, the charmingly festive Passau Christkindlmarkt has about 70 stalls selling decorations, gifts and food and wine. No Christmas market experience is complete without a taste of Gluhwein (a mulled wine) and gingerbread!

Vienna, Austria

Dating back to the Middle Ages, Vienna’s Christmas markets are steeped in tradition. The city is home to more than 20 markets, but perhaps the most spectacular is the one situated in front of city hall. This fair is so big, consider visiting twice: once during the day and again at night, when it’s wonderfully lit up.
