5 Bathroom Design Mistakes (& What To Do Instead)
Keep your bathroom feeling fresh with these tips.
Practicality is the name of the game when it comes to designing a bathroom. A highly-used and typically compact space, you want your bathroom to be easy to clean, comfortable, and tidy.
Here are five common design mistakes to avoid in your bathroom.
1. Proper ventilation

Between steamy showers and splashing sinks, bathrooms are prone to moisture build-up. To avoid dreaded mould and mildew, ensure that your bathroom has proper ventilation in the form of an exhaust fan and/or gap above your shower door.
2. Lighting fixtures

Between a lack of light to straight-up boring fixtures, lighting is an oft-forgotten aspect of bathroom design. The experts suggest using a mix of sconces, overhead, and indirect ambient. Layered lighting is perfect for relaxing baths and showers as well as getting ready in the morning.
3. Overlooking storage

A lack of storage is a surefire way to clutter up your bathroom. Without proper spots for everything, your countertop is bound to become a collection spot for odds and ends. Choose a vanity and cabinets with deep drawers (bonus if you include organizers!) to keep your bathroom products out of sight. Also consider incorporating built-in shelves into your shower design or an above-the-toilet unit for extra storage.
4. View of the toilet

A big bathroom design no-no is placing the toilet in full view of the doorway. Instead, angle your toilet away from the door or hide it away with a half partition.
5. Small or uneven tiles

Tiles are a cool way to add personality to your bathroom, but small or uneven options can be tricky to clean. Dirt and grime can easily get trapped in the grout, quickly turning even the cleanest of bathrooms into a bacteria haven.
